Have you ever been scrolling through Instagram and TikTok, and found yourself watching a video that claims to have the one mobility drill you need to fix your lower back pain? Or maybe the one strength movement you need to be a faster runner?

We’ve all been there. In the age of social media, it’s easy to get caught up in miraculous claims and promises of instant pain relief. As a chiropractor, I believe in a more grounded approach to choosing exercise and movement that benefits your body and teaches you how to manage pain more effectively. It’s important to understand your body’s needs. Every individual is unique, and so are their physical conditions and health goals. When choosing exercises, there are a few factors to consider:

Your current health condition: Consider your past and present injuries, areas of pain or discomfort and limited ranges of motion. You may have underlying conditions that impact your recovery as well. All these aspects are investigated during an initial assessment with a chiropractor.

Your current physical activity and goals: Create an exercise plan that matches your current abilities and fitness levels. Find ways to move without aggravating your injury and gradually progress towards your goal. It’s important to be realistic and patient throughout recovery.

Your exercise preference and enjoyment: Sometimes the best exercise you can do is the one you enjoy doing! This will increase your likelihood to stay consistent and feel good, which is key for long-term benefits and achieving your goals.

So the next time you stumble upon social media posts that promise transformative health benefits, remember that health is not one-size-fits-all. When choosing exercises for pain relief and overall health, it should be designed for YOU. If you’re not sure where to start, consider consulting with a healthcare professional, like a chiropractor, for individualized care and exercise to achieve sustainable improvements.
